I’m going to be in San Diego from May 8-14 for a work-related seminar. Anybody have any recommendations about what to do or see when I’m there? I’ll be staying on Coronado Island. I’ll have Saturday and Sunday to tour around — the rest of the week I’m free in the evenings. I’d appreciate any ideas.
Also, will I need to rent a car?
Yes, rent a car. Especially if you’re staying in Coronado (but, Coronado is so nice, you might not want to leave). But getting to/from Hillcrest (nifty little gay area) and other points of interest will track up a ton of cabfares; we did the car thing and had a blast just last month.
La Jolla is beautiful.
Yes- rent a car. Coronado Island is nice but out away from everywhere else. Hillcrestis the gay part of San Diego- I was not amuzed to read the write up at the following website- http://www.localwally.com/yuck.html
i second the car rental. it’s not manhattan. but upgrade to a convertible if you can. the sun will be nice. and the wind blowing through your hair as you drive down highways 1 and 5 will be great.
also visit mission bay. it’s the college version of la jolla. (read cute shirtless boys) and cheap quirky shops for random things you might never need.
Dinner in the Little Italy section of San Diego is a nice change from all the bustle and bustle of the downtown Gaslamp District.
San Diego’s an awesome city with plenty of little microcosms of life here and there so if you want to explore the city outside of Coronado island, you’d best get a car. Food wise there’s good italian food in Downtown Little Italy, the best Mexican food and Margaritas in Old Town.
As everyone said there’s Hillcrest for the gay scene, Pacific and Mission Beaches for your surfer bums. La Jolla, just a nice pricey community to enjoy the sun and scenery.
