Westboro v. Falwell

Yesterday was Jerry Falwell’s funeral. But, um:

The funeral also drew protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., which sent about a dozen members who claimed Mr. Falwell was a friend of gay men and lesbians, The Associated Press reported.

And I didn’t think it was possible for the Westboro folks to get any stupider.

They’re not even trying anymore.

  1. Because Jesus picketed *so many* funerals…

One of the standard claims of the Westboro folks is that God “struck down” these people, be they US soldiers killed in Iraq, Jerry Falwell, or even the late Chief Justice Rehnquist, who, if memory serves, was labeled a “faggoty ass judge” by the Westboro “church.” Mr. Phelps ain’t no spring chicken — I wonder what their press release will claim when he finally kicks the bucket?

  2. The whole thing is a complete circus. It’s comforting, as a thoughtful Christian, to know that there are still assclowns out there who will praise Falwell, as Franklin Graham does in this article, on his belief in “the inerrancy of the Bible.” That’s been in some serious doubt, for those keeping track, since the Civil War when both sides claimed justification from Scripture for their pro- and anti-slavery positions.

God. How depressing that Falwell represents Virginia, and Christians, in the minds of many.
