It’s because if he gives the standard “I don’t remember” lie then a) it will show up on YouTube in another hysterical “Total Recall” montage and b) he will still be committing perjury–not that he has a problem with that, but now that he’s realized he’s actually going to be held accountable for the perjury he’s already committed he’s a little gun-shy.
…and a whole generation of law students decide not to practice law.
People like him make me want to believe in a vengeful God. He needs to be smited SO bad.
He is a courageous, truthful public official. Not!
Didn’t you hear? The White House announced today that Gonzales’ circumlocution was necessary for national security reasons. He wasn’t lying or prevaricating, but protecting highly classified information from disclosure that would cause grave damage to American security. No matter what liberals whine, the man is a true patriotic hero of the highest dedication and integrity.
He has no incentive to tell the truth, except integrity (of which he apparently has none). Even if Congress could somehow manage to make criminal charges stick, *ding* — pardon! It’s not like his legal career will suffer after Bush leaves office: he, like Libby and all the rest, will always be perceived as a hero-martyr. He’ll just “retire” as a partner at some giant law firm somewhere (or, maybe he could teach Constitutional law at Liberty University).
