Here’s my rundown on the old/new TV shows I’ve watched so far in this new TV season. I’ve already discussed Reunion, but here are the rest:
Bones: David Boreanaz as an F.B.I. agent, Emily Deschanel as a forensic anthropologist. They solve gruesome crimes. Cute, quirky show with humor and romantic tension. David Boreanaz looks better than ever.
Prison Break: Wentworth Miller has the most amazing eyes. Guy gets himself imprisoned in order to break out his brother, who is set for execution for a murder he didn’t commit. Contrived, but fun.
Commander in Chief: We watched the TiVo’d premiere of this last night. Geena Davis as the first female/Independent president, who takes office after the Republican president dies. Donald Sutherland plays the evil, smarmy, Republican Speaker of the House, who wants her job. The show seems to take a different tack than The West Wing: this show is about the president, whereas that show is about the presidency. On the first episode of The West Wing, Martin Sheen didn’t appear until the final minutes. In fact, as originally conceived, the president on The West Wing was never going to be seen by the audience except in glimpses. (I guess they realized that would limit the story possibilities.)
I’ve often found Geena Davis kind of annoying – anyone remember her pre-Oscar stint a couple of years ago? – so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I like her more than I thought I would. “You’re not in a position to tell me how I take my coffee.” Wonderfully delivered.
Anyway, I can’t resist a new TV show about the White House, so I’ll be watching this to see how things turn out. (Oh, and the new president has a hot son.
The West Wing: I’m so glad you’re back, West Wing. Off to a good start so far. Poor Donna – they were totally telegraphing that she was going to become Josh’s new deputy, and then he goes and says no. Ack! I hope they make up. But when did Leo become so stupid? I guess he’s better working behind the scenes than running as a candidate.
Barlett has been all about the three-piece suits lately. I don’t like them – they make him look like a bank president and remind me too much of Robert Novak.
But hooray for Kristen Chenoweth in the opening credits. And I was glad to see that my high school friend is still on! I wonder if she’ll get a job in the Santos administration.
Lost: Cuh-RAY-zee. I don’t know what the hell’s going on underground, or why that shark had the same decal on its tailfin as appears on the Scottish guy’s uniform and all the jars of food. I don’t read TV message boards because I always find that I get spoiled, misinformed, or made to feel incredibly oblivious when I do so. Maybe I can find one that isn’t as spoily, or I’ll just continue to let everything filter down to me through Matt.
Veronica Mars: We watched the season premiere last night. It seems like forever since last season’s finale. Although they’ve resolved that mystery, the show seems to be as strong as ever. Charisma Carpenter! She’s totally playing Cordelia again (the old Cordelia with the long hair, not the later, short-haired, more mature one), but that’s ok. And those last few minutes last night – wow. Neither of us saw that coming and it creeped the hell out of me. This is gonna be good.
Invasion: We watched the first episode. I’m not all that into it.
How I Met Your Mother: Cute. Too cute? I’m not sure yet.
Still to come: Alias and Smallville premiere tonight (at the same time, but we’ll catch one on digital cable and the other on the non-digital-cable TV).
All this television. Matt is such a bad influence on me…
You should check out Nick Brendan’s new show, Kitchen Confidential, it is really funny! It’s on at the same time as How I met Your Mother, but thanks to DVR, it’s all ok! Actually I think it is better How I met Your Mother, but I’m watching both for now.
What was Genna Davis’ pre-oscar stint? Was it worse than Rob Lowe singing Porud Mary with Snow White?
that hot son, matt lanter, was actually alson on manhunt–bravo’s model search show. he’s the guy with the “baby fat”. the show’s bio only mentions that he models and had stints on other tv shows but of course leaves out Manhunt!
Command in Chief is very good, so far.
