I learned a new way to tie a necktie the other day. For years, I’ve known only one method of tying a tie – the four-in-hand (I didn’t even know that’s what it was called until I looked at that website). But my knot would always come out asymmetrical, and I finally got tired of it and decided to see if I could learn a new knot.
I am now the proud user of the Half-Windsor. (It sort of sounds like a wrestling move, the Half Nelson, but whatever.)
Hooray for symmetrical tie knots.
It’s the best. The full windsor is overkill, but it’s a good way to make a really long tie just a bit shorter shorter. (You know. If you’re a pocket gay.)
Ahh, the Half-Windsor. When I was a kid, that was the knot my dad used and thus the only one he taught me; many years later I learned about the four-in-hand and showed it to him like a great discovery. By your pupils you are taught. ;)
You mean THAT’S the reason my tie is always asymmetrical?!?! Damn you four-in -hand; and shame on my father for making me believe that that was the only way to tie a tie.
I can’t wait to try out all these new knots!
For twenty-four years I have had to wear a tie to work. Some were beautiful, but all of them felt like the yoke of a slave or the noose of a condemned man. I will be glad to untie the knot on that last day of work. I plan to make a quilt out of them.
I am also a half-Windsor man.
I still can’t do any of these. Dan tried to show me last night; maybe I’ll give it another go when sober.
I have two neckties already tied in my closet and I pull one of them on when I have an interview. Thank god I have never had a dress code more restrictive than corporate casual.
