Gym Costs?

How much does a gym membership cost in Manhattan? I’m thinking of getting one, but I have no idea what a good price for a membership is. Any input?

  1. My input would be that environment/location are the starting points more than price. Find a gym you like and feel comfortable at by going there and checking it out firsthand. A good time to do this is early in the week in the early evening when the crowd is large. Then consider the price. A bargain deal is useless if you never go; on the other hand, you don’t need to overpay either. I think the range can be anywhere from $50-120 and up. Every gym seems to have a free trial period so take advantage of that. Also, many health plans have a gym reimbursement (mine is $100 every six months), which you can factor into the overall cost.

  2. $75 per month at New York Sports Club, which, I know, I know, is NYC’s McGym, but nevertheless NYSC has the advantage of (i) permitting you to cancel on a month’s notice with no penalty; (ii) having locations within walking distance from anywhere your finger lands on the Manhattan island map, and (iii) has consistently new equipment, large choice of classes, and unlimited towel service. Some NYSC locations are larger and more state-of-the art than others (I love the one at the Crown Plaza at 49th and Broadway, near where I work, because of its pool, spacious workout area, and contingent of very cute theater folk working out there). Good luck…
