Happy 25th, CD

Yesterday was the 25th birthday of the compact disc.

I got my first CD player for my bar mitzvah in March 1987. It was part of an enormous stereo system that included two tape decks and a turntable, and it all fit into a wooden case on wheels with a glass door.

I’m not sure which CD is the first I ever owned. It was either Genesis, Invisible Touch, Bon Jovi, Bon Jovi, or The Bangles, Different Light.

Wow, that last disc was a good one. Lately I’ve been moving my CD collection from jewel cases into slim CD sleeves, and I can’t find it anywhere. Boo.

  1. me too! I got 2 CD’s:

    1. Graceland
    2. Stormfront

You were somewhat of an earlier adopter then me but only because you’re older.

  2. I think my first CD was Janet Jackson, Rhythm Nation, which I’d had on cassette, but liked so much that I got it on CD once I had my own CD player.

Aside: today we were watching The Wedding Singer, which is set in the ’80s of course, and there’s that quick scene where Drew Barrymore’s fiance buys her a newfangled $700 CD player. She’s all, “You wanna play a record?” “No, it doesn’t play records. It plays CDs. It’s a CD player.” Heh.

  3. I got my first CD player (a Sanyo portable) in November 1986, though it was a bit more than 13 years after my bar mitzvah and I bought it myself.

But I got my first CD about six months before I got the player. It was Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures, a replacement for a worn-out cassette copy of a library record. A friend had a player, so I decided a CD would make a better tape copy than an LP. I still have both the CD and the tape.

Thanks for the opportunity to relive some ancient history.

  4. I asked my mom for a CD player for my birthday my junior year of high school and she said, “But you don’t have any CD’s.”

My first CD…oh, man, you have to promise not to tell anyone…my first cd was “Michael Crawford Sings Andrew Lloyd Webber.”

  5. My First CD was also Genesis, Invisible Touch. I remember my first work bonus of $100 being spent on CD’s — I thought I was in heaven and would not need any more music EVER! 100 CD’s and a couple of iPods later :-)

  6. My first CD was – bear with me – Fantasia, the 1941 Disney movie. My family had one of those huge wood stereos that took up a corner of the living room. My second was U2’s The Joshua Tree. I still bought tape until 94 when I got my first “personel” CD player. Now 300+ disks (I still by CD’s), several CD players, 2 ipods, I still love the music of all those tapes and Fantasia brings back so many memories.

  7. I joined Columbia records club in 1992, so I got the initial ten CDs (and it took forever to get out of the club again). I can’t remember what they all were, but they included:

They Might Be Giants “Flood” and “Apollo 18”
Nine Inch Nails “Pretty Hate Machine”
    Squeeze “Singles 45s and Under”
Depeche Mode “Catching Up With Depeche Mode”

The softer side of alternative, I guess…
