A cast member of “My Three Sons” died on Friday: Beverly Garland, who played the second wife of Fred MacMurray’s character.
“My Three Sons” is one of the longest-running sitcoms in American TV history. Think of how much American culture changed between September 1960, when it premiered, and August 1972, when it left the air. The show changed a great deal as well, as that link shows: cast changes, hairstyle changes, black-and-white to color.
Anyway, while doing a YouTube search for the show, I found this bizarre TV commercial the cast did for Hunt’s flavored ketchups. Pizza-flavored ketchup? Hmm…
We watched My Three Sons when I was a kid. I always liked the uncle the best.
I wrote about Beverly Garland, too. We must have had a Vulcan mind meld! I stayed at her hotel during my one and only trip to Los Angeles. For that, I’ll always remember Ms. Garland fondly. I loved the show, too.
Beverly Garland died?
How did I miss this?
She was awesome. She worked in a ton of crap (Swamp Diamonds, the Alligator People, Gunslinger)- but no matter how much the rest of the production stunk, she always acted her GUTS out.
Love her.
I’ll have to close with one of my favorite Beverly Garland lines, from It Conquered The World (imagine her saying it, in Bronson Canyons, as she aims a shotgun at a 7-foot carrot):
“Go ahead! Use your superior intellect on me! I’LL SEE YOU IN HELL, FIRST!”
