This is shocking. John Updike seemed like one of those writers who had been around forever and always would be. It seemed like he had something in The New Yorker every other week. I can’t say I read much of his work, but he was an icon.

I occasionally have a problem of confusing two things or persons with a similar name element. This is a good example: whenever I have read or heard the name John Updike, I have thought instead of Upton Sinclair. The record retrieval system of my brain is a bit wonky. So, when I read this I was surprised 1.) that he was still alive in order to be recently deceased and 2.) that there was no reference to The Jungle.
That’s okay. I always confuse Upton Sinclair with Sinclair Lewis.
I sense a game beginning.
Sinclair Lewis > Lewis Carroll
